Productivity Tip: Take a Five Minute Break

Sometimes you just need to take five…literally!

In this post I offer a friendly reminder of the importance of taking breaks, especially when you are in the thick of things.

When’s the last time you took a solid five-minute break?

That is, a complete and total break from whatever it is you happen to be working on at the moment.

Five minutes may not seem like a long period of time, but even a short break such as this can really help you refresh and refocus your attention.

Below are a few different tips you can try to change things up a bit and give yourself a break. You deserve it!

Change your physical location.

If you’re sitting, stand for a bit. If you’re working indoors, go outdoors. Try moving from one area or room of your office or home for another. If you’ve been still, maybe it’s time for a quick, brisk walk outdoors or an impromptu dance break jamming to your favorite tunes.

Let your imagination run wild.

When’s the last time you let your mind wander? It’s as simple as looking out the window to see what’s going on outside, picking up a pencil and doodling a bit on a piece of paper, or thinking about what exotic location you’d next like to visit for your annual vacation.

Consider doing nothing at all.

That’s right, I mean absolutely nothing! Do you have the patience to sit or stand still for five whole minutes? You could keep your eyes open or closed, but the idea is to just be still and relax. This might make those five minutes seem like an absolute eternity, but hey, couldn’t you use a mini-vacation from whatever it is you are doing? Go ahead and just relax…it will be time to get back to work before you know it.
