Is your jewelry box in need of some organization?
Need help cleaning things out, and organizing things so you can find them?
In this post, I offer a few tips to help you organize the contents of a jewelry box, or any compartmentalized storage container, be it a tackle box, makeup box, toolbox or the like.
Empty the box and give it a thorough cleaning.
Before you organize anything, empty out the box and place all of your jewelry in a separate, sturdy container or box.
An empty shoe box works well for this temporary storage.
Then, give the jewelry box a thorough vacuuming or wipe down.
It’s far easier to organize items in a clean container!
Do some decluttering.
Now it’s time to do some spring cleaning! Go through your collection of jewelry and sort items into one of these three piles: items to keep, items to clean/repair, and items to give away or donate.
The second pile is for any bands, clasps or hooks that need to be repaired at the jeweler’s, or any pieces that need to be cleaned and/or polished.
Pack up and wrap any items you want to give away to a friend or family member, or perhaps donate to a charity.
Sort the remaining items once again.
Go through each of the remaining items in your collection and sort them into the following piles: necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, pins and brooches. You can further sort these piles into smaller piles, should you so desire, such as by size or length (for example, chain length in a necklace), material (gold, silver, pearls, beads, wood, fabric, etc.), formal or casual pieces.
Take stock of the compartments in the box.
Get a good look at all the built-in compartments in the jewelry box. What type of sections, compartments, drawers or hooks are there inside the box? How could you organize your collection inside of these compartments? You may find it helpful to do some planning and lay out items from your collection next to the open jewelry box to get a sense of where you’ll store things inside the box.
Put back each of your pieces into the box, one by one, according to your plan. If you have the space, try and place one piece into a single compartment so you easily see what’s what. If not, just make use of the space you do have, as best you can. You may need to double or triple up rings in a small boxed section, for example. Snap a digital photo of your box so you’ll have a reminder as to how you organized each of the pieces. To keep your box in order, place pieces back into their compartments after each wearing.
