Do you want to organize a hallway in your apartment or home?
Are you looking for simple tips to help you put and keep things in order?
Hallways are the entry points to our homes and offices.
They deserve as much organization attention as any other living space.
In this post, you’ll find a few tips to help you sort things out and get your hallway organized.
Remove items that don’t belong in the hallway.
Typically, a hallway will house items such as jackets, coats, shoes and the like.
It’s not uncommon to find transitory objects in the space, such as outgoing mail or clothes for donation.
However, by no means should these items take up permanent residence.
Take a walk through your hallway to identify items that don’t belong in the space.
Relocate any materials that obviously belong in another room of the home, such as the living room, kitchen, or bedroom.
Remove and store out of season clothing, sports equipment, and items from a recent shopping trip where they belong.
You should also appropriately deal with any other items that need to be trashed, recycled, or donated.
Carve out functional zones.
Now it’s time to define all the different mini zones in your hallway from the main entrance outward.
Your hallway may serve double or triple duty; storage for outdoor clothing, personal belongings, and your dog’s leash.
Start at the front of the hallway near the main door. Remember, the door should be able to be fully opened.
Then, work your way towards the center of the home.
What types of functional zones can you include? Here are a few common zones to get you started:
Storage – outwear including coats, jackets, and shoes
Accessories – gloves, hats, scarves, sunglasses and umbrellas
Bags – backpacks, handbags, and shopping bags
Personal items – house keys, car keys, cellphones, chargers, and wallets
Temporary items – briefly store incoming and outgoing mail, dog leashes, and items to be returned
Reassess and find proper storage options.
Now that you’ve got your hallway mapped out, it’s time to find some storage solutions.
When it comes to a narrow space like a hallway, vertical storage makes a lot of sense.
Look for options to store materials vertically. Consider wall mounted coat racks and shelving and waist-high tables or chests with storage compartments.
Be sure to make use of all existing space. For instance, if you have a long bench, place baskets or containers underneath to store gloves, hats and umbrellas.
Remember, you don’t have to break the bank when it comes to finding storage options.
Maybe there’s an an old coatrack lying around your home or a tall narrow bookcase that could be converted into a shoe and accessory storage area.
Perhaps your jam-packed hall closet just needs a thorough decluttering of coats and jackets to free up some much needed storage space.
