Are you looking for some organizing rules to help keep your home and office tidy?

Do you want a simple way to keep things neat throughout the year?

When it comes to getting organized, what rules do you think you need to follow?

Do you have to keep things tidy and neat at all hours of the day?

Do you need to purchase organization supplies?

Actually, there’s only a few rules you need to follow.

In this post, you’ll find three key organization rules you need to follow if you want to maintain order in your space.

Get ready, get set, it’s time to organize!

Select what you want to organize.

This may sound a bit hokey, but it is very important to decide on what you want to organize before you begin.

It’s the difference between organizing your garage versus your kitchen’s junk drawer.

These two projects involve different items, a different frames of mind and different amounts of time to complete.

Before you get started on any organizing project, be really specific about what you’ll be working on.

Is it big project or a small one? Will it take an hour or two to complete or several days and weeks to finish?

Where specifically is this project taking place?

Sort items.

This second rule involves taking what you already have and placing items into some sort of recognizable pattern.

Sorting is like putting items through a giant funnel; the more you sort, the more similarly grouped the items will be.

The best way to approach sorting is to do so in broad strokes and then work your way down to more fine detail.

For example, if you’ve got a cluttered desk, the easiest way to sort things is to decide what you need to keep versus what you need to trash or recycle.

Once you’ve gotten through that initial sorting session, you can then group like items with like items, such as files, books, office supplies and so on.

Store items.

You’ve selected and sorted, and now it’s time to keep everything contained so you can easily find things when you need them.

Defining storage locations is paramount to keeping things organized; it’s like you are giving items a home of their own.

Take a moment to figure out where you are going to keep materials.

From the example above, you might decide to keep your office supplies in a drawer of your desk, your books in a bookcase and files in a filling rack or filing cabinet.

Once you’ve finished using an item, you’ll know exactly where to put it.
