7 Smart Ways to Seize the Day Do you want to make the most of your time, today and everyday?

Are you looking for some effective ways to wisely manage your time and energy?

Making the most of the time you have right now is always a smart decision.

In fact, you’ve probably heard the phrase, carpe diem, at least some point in your life.

The Latin phrase is most commonly translated as “seize the day.”

When you think about it, the phrase is wonderfully empowering.

It makes you feel as if everything, and anything, in the world is possible.

You could start a new business from home, take that magical once-in-a-lifetime vacation to Tahiti, receive that coveted promotion, find the love of your life, invent an incredible new product that will change the world…truly anything is possible!

One day can truly have a profound effect on the way you work and live.

But here’s the real kicker: you don’t necessarily have to seize an entire day in order to make a difference in your life.

You just have to seize the moment.

To be clear, I’m not talking about seizing a singular moment or a brief period of time.

It’s about seizing those little moments that take place each and every day.

Added up, these brief moments make up an enormous part of our life experience.

Believe or not, you have the power to make a difference in your life with the simplest of actions!

All it takes is a bit of awareness and honest to goodness elbow grease.

And don’t worry, the results are wholly worth the effort.

In this post, I offer seven smart ways you can seize the day, right now.

Try out any one of these seven tips whenever you want a boost of excitement, satisfaction, or sense of accomplishment.

They are sure to have you make the most of your time in a happy and healthy way!

Remove a thorn from your side.

Do you needlessly suffer from small annoyances on a daily basis? Are you one to put off small tasks, to-dos, or errands on a daily basis? While procrastinating on tasks can be temporarily satisfying, the end result is hardly glamorous.

Day after day you’ll find yourself complaining about completing a to-do, finishing a task, or getting down to the root of a minor daily trouble. And for what? You’ll still be exactly where you are when you started.

You owe it to yourself to be comfortable while you go about your daily routine. Consider this the end of the equivalent of walking around with a thorn in your side! What small action could you take today that would provide you with some much-needed relief?

Could you finally renew your gym membership, fix the leg on the patio table, or run that errand to the laundromat? Not only will you complete your task, but you’ll also feel good about it, too.

Get in touch with a loved one.

We’re all here on this planet for such a brief period of time. While the days may seem long and drawn out, the reality is that the years and decades fly past us faster than we care to admit.

Yes, we say we’ll get in touch with our best friend or grandfather. We say we’ll reunite with classmates and neighbors. But weeks and months ago by before we start to realize what we haven’t done. And unfortunately, sometimes our realization come a little too late.

Have you been meaning to get in touch with a loved one? Now is the perfect time to pick up the phone and call that long-lost friend or relative. Your call will mean the world to that special someone. Relieve old memories, discuss the present, and talk about the future. That’s not a bad way of seizing the moment, if you ask me.

Take stock of where you are in your life.

Do you ever wonder what life would be like if you were married, had that degree or certificate, had more money, bought that fancy car, or lived in that stunning new house? It’s time to tuck away all those “What-if?” thoughts and acknowledge where you are right now.

What did you accomplish today? What did you accomplish last week? How about last month? Even seemingly unimportant tasks or actions matter.

If you’re having trouble figuring out what took place, you may want to consult your calendar or schedule. And if you want to record what’s happening in your life right now, you can’t go wrong spending some time writing in your journal, diary, or notebook.

Where you are right now is a precious moment that needs to be valued. Treasure and believe in it. Now is the start of something bigger and better. In the words of Ray Bradbury, “Treasure this day, and treasure yourself. Truly, neither will ever happen again.”

Experience life without electronic devices.

All too often do we miss life’s simple moments. There’s no selfie, Facebook post, or Instagram update that can replicate the taste of well-cooked meal, the smell of rain, or the soft touch of a loved one’s hand. That being said, are you letting electronic devices steal away your time, energy, and enjoyment of the present moment?

Do yourself a favor and experience life without electronic devices, if only for a few minutes or hours. Try completely switching off your electronic devices while you work, at mealtimes, or when meeting with friends and family. Your conversations, interactions, and memories will be that much more rich and rewarding.

Go with the flow.

You’re trying to arrange a brunch get-together with friends, but your arrangements aren’t going very well. Some of your friends are extremely busy, while others cannot make the potential dates you’ve proposed. Should you continue to force your way through this impasse to make your brunch a reality, or should you simply go with the flow?

If you were to look at the above situation through the lens of living in the moment, you’d probably come to the conclusion that you should put your brunch arrangements on a brief hiatus. Obviously, it’s not worth wasting your time or energy trying to organize a social activity that has no chance of happening right now.

Practice letting go of your expectations. Sometimes, things have to happen at their own pace. Shelve those plans and revisit items at a later date, if necessary. But for now, just enjoy the ride and go with the flow.

Feel the fear…and take action.

Seizing the moment means recognizing your fears, acknowledging your discomfort, and pushing through the whole experience. That being said, that can you do today that will get you out of your head and into some good old-fashioned action? Conquering even the smallest of tasks can set you up for success in future.

Press “Send” on that scholarship application, ask that cute guy out on a date, or voice your opinion at a work meeting. Yes, you may feel a flutter of discomfort at first, but you’ll never know what wonderful experiences could come out of pushing through your fears.

Enjoy the transitions in your life.

Sometimes we have to take a step back so we can embrace the less appealing transitions in our lives. We’ve all been there: that brief period of time when we’re between jobs, the long weeks and months after graduating from school, or when we welcome a new baby into the world.

Don’t forget: these little bits of time matter. They allow us to better appreciate those more appealing times in life. Instead of rushing through a seemingly uncomfortable stretch, take a deep breath, and just experience it. Remember, this moment won’t be around forever. This too shall pass.
