Productivity Tip: Get More Done at Work with a Productive Lunch Hour

There’s a fantastic productivity booster that is available to you each and every day…but are you using it to your advantage?

Today’s post covers something that many people won’t talk about…how to take a proper lunch break so you can be more productive when working.

I am aware that some of the tips below may be more feasible in some jobs and work places than others, so just do what you can. Every little bit helps!

Unplug from work.

They call it a lunch break for two reasons: you eat lunch and you take a break from doing work. Clever, huh? The temptation to work straight through lunch might be strong, but you’ll feel so much better after taking break than just plowing through something feeling hungry, tired and cranky. Put down the work and let coworkers and colleagues know when you’ll return from your lunch break.

Eat lunch.

Here’s the other part of the lunch break equation…actually eating lunch! Have a full meal and enjoy yourself. If you routinely eat at your desk or workstation, eat in the break room, cafeteria, outdoor or other area. The change of scenery and environment will be good for you. Besides, who wants a keyboard or workstation filled with crumbs?

Drink water.

Do you drink a lot a coffee, tea, soft drinks or other beverages during the work day? What about water? You may consciously know you are hungry at lunchtime, but you may not realize you are thirsty. Give your body what it needs and have some water.

Get moving!

Go out for a short walk, stretch, walk up a flight of stairs, stand up instead of sitting, basically do anything to get your body moving and to get your heart pumping and blood circulating.

Do something non-work related.

Read a book or magazine, do a crossword puzzle, listen to some soothing music, watch a short video, listen to a podcast, call a friend, play a game, sing a song, meditate…just be sure to give your mind and body a break.

Now to you…do you take your full lunch break at work to unplug and recharge? Why or why not? Do you think this is helping or hindering your productivity at work? Leave a comment below and join in the conversation!
