Wondering how to organize your boards?

Pinterest is website that allows you to collect and share different images, information and the like from the web or your computer onto virtual bulletin boards.

Today’s post gives you a few pointers to help you curate your boards and keep things in order.

Figure out why you want to use Pinterest.

Before you go off on a wild pinning tangent (for those of you already on Pinterest, you’ll know what I mean), it can help to figure out why you are using Pinterest.

Are you interested in using it for work or personal use?

Breaking down your reasons even further will help determine what boards you’ll want to create.

Are you looking for information to help you lose weight, decorating ideas for a dinner party, or inspiration for a new series of sketches you are working on?

Perhaps you’re looking for some productivity hacks, teaching plans, or interior design ideas for your new office?

The sky’s the limit!

Brainstorm board ideas and pinning criteria.

Jot down a couple of board ideas based on your interests above.

You might also want to develop pinning criteria for your boards to help keep things in order.

When I was first joined Pinterest, I found it helpful to create a set of criteria for my pins so that I knew where I would pin different items.

For example, I have a board called “Clever Organizing Ideas” where I post different organizing how-tos, DIYs and products for the home and office.

This is different from my board “The Organized Home,” which has different tips, tricks, images and ideas for a more organized home.

It can help to incorporate your organizing personality into the board brainstorming process.

If you’re the type of person who loves sorting items to a very detailed level and/or whose job calls for it, you’ll probably want more detailed boards than general ones.

For example, if you are redecorating your home room by room, or if you are an interior designer, you might want to have different decorating boards for different rooms of the house such as “Living Room,” “Bedroom,” “Bathroom,” “Kitchen,” and so on.

On the other hand, if you’re the type of person who doesn’t like sorting down items to the Nth degree, then you’ll want to keep things simple.

If you are redecorating your home you might just create a board called “Redecorating Home” and drop all relevant pins into that  board.

Give boards unique and descriptive names.

Balancing out your board ideas, criteria and organizing personality, you’ll want to give your boards names that are both unique and descriptive so you don’t accidentally confuse one board for another.

Having a board named “Party” and another board named “Birthday” might be a tad confusing when you’re ready to pin a how-to-make-a-pinata tutorial.

Be as specific as you can when naming boards; you might even eliminate some duplicate boards this way.

Besides giving boards names, you can also give them a description. This is a handy place to write in and clarify your board’s criteria (see above).

Move your boards on-screen.

Pinterest allows you to grab and drag boards into different locations of your Pinterest account. I

f you’ve got similar interests or subjects, you may want to group these items together on-screen for easy viewing and retrieval of information.

Let’s say you are really into DIY projects and cooking.

You could group all of your DIY projects together at the top of the screen, and group all of your cooking projects together at the bottom of the screen.

Lastly, here’s a few bonus tips for maintaining orderly and tidy boards:

Keep an eye out for duplicate pins.

As of the writing of this post, Pinterest now has a function that lets you know when you’ve already posted a pin to a board (hey, it happens). Watch out for these alerts so you don’t add duplicate pins to the same board.

Consider deleting boards with just one or two items.

If you haven’t added items to a particular board over the course of several months or a year, you might want to delete the board and re-categorize the pins in that board to keep things looking tidy.

How much time you want to spend sorting and categorizing your pins? The more boards you have, the more time you’ll spend deciding what pin goes where and curating your boards in general.

Finally, Pinterest allows you be as specific or general as you like when making boards.

Plus, you can easily make changes and edits when things aren’t to your liking.

No matter how you organize your boards, make sure they are organized in a way that work best for you.

    Is there a way to put subcatagories on a board. For example I have a board called House and Home and I’d like to break it down into subcatagories such as kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, etc without creating an additional board

      Hi Lori, hmm, as far as I know, you’ve have to go through each of the pins manually and repin them to separate boards. I haven’t heard anything about subcategories.
