How to Organize Apps on Your Smartphone

Image of man holding cellphone and the phrase, How to Organize Apps on Your SmartphoneDo you find yourself constantly looking for apps on your smartphone?

Do you want to have everything organized in a neat and orderly fashion?

In this post, I show you how to easily rearrange the apps on your smartphone so you can find them when you need them.

Do some app housekeeping.

Before you begin organizing, delete those apps you no longer use or want.

You don’t want to organize, say, forty apps, only to find out you don’t need half of them!

Go through each of the apps on your smartphone, one by one, and decide whether you’re going to keep the app, or delete it.

If you’re having trouble when it comes to making a decision, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I use this app on a regular basis?
  • When’s the last time I used this app?
  • Do I enjoy using this app?
  • Is the app very stable or does it constantly crash when I use it?
  • Is this app really useful for me and my needs?

If you sync your smartphone to your computer, you’ll also want to make sure you permanently remove the app from the computer, as well.

Choose an organization method.

There’s countless ways to organize apps on a smartphone. All you have to do is use your imagination, and find a method that works best for you and your lifestyle.

Here’s several ideas to get you started.

You can follow the organization methods below as-is, or create your own custom method using any one or more of the below items:

Frequently used items

Place apps you use on a regular basis on the very first screen on your smartphone. You can then continue with other apps, by frequency of use, on the screens that follow.

Alphabetical order

Organize all of your apps by their name. This makes it easy to find an app when it’s at the top of your mind, but you don’t want to spend time looking for a particular icon, or searching for the name among a field of other apps.

Location specific

Do you only use certain apps when you’re at home, work, or school? Why not organize them in this manner? You could, for example, place all the apps you use while at work on one or more screens, followed by apps you use at home or during your leisure time.

Role specific

Not all apps are created equal. Some only give you information or updates, while others require you to enter information or data. It’s worth thinking about the type of role a particular plays.

For instance, you could group all of your weather, transit, and news apps together (these apps give you information) in one screen or area of your smartphone , and group input-based apps such as a texting app, weight loss tracker, or to-do list (these are apps where you enter in dat) on another screen or area of your phone.

Similar type

You may have a couple of different apps with similar uses. Let’s say you’re an avid weather-watcher. You have several different apps that report different types of weather information, so you might like to keep those apps together on a particular screen, or area of the screen. The same idea goes for game, productivity, news, social media, and music apps.

Organize everything.

Okay, you should have decided upon a method of organization for your phone. Now it’s time to get busy and rearrange everything.

One of the best things about organizing apps on a smartphone is that you can always change or rearrange things with just the flick of a finger. If you happen to change the location of an app, but find the new location really doesn’t work for you, you can always change it, wherever you are.

That being said, don’t be afraid to try things out! With a little bit of patience, and a lot of creativity, you can organize the apps on your smartphone to your heart’s desire.

On my iPhone, I group apps together in their own ‘folder.’ For example, I have one ‘folder’ I call transportation. It has transit trackers, train schedule finders, subway maps. This requires an extra step – I have to first open the ‘folder’ called transportation to be able to open one of the apps. But it allows all of those apps to appear on my first screen where I can access them quickly and without searching. This makes my screens tidy and searchable and, by collecting like apps into ‘folders,’ I have a lot fewer screens to search through!

I love your transportation “folder,” Liz! Searching through less screens is definitely a big bonus. One of my preferred folders is one called “Social Media.” I think that extra step, or the act of going into the folder, lets me know what I’m getting into. For example, I know not to go into that folder when I’m getting ready to leave for an appointment. Thanks so much for reading and for leaving a comment!
