5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Skip Your Workout for More Time

Will you go to the park or gym today?

Is your exercise workout the first thing that gets cut from your schedule when you need more time?

It can be tempting to chuck out an hour of your time and apply it to something else in your life…but are you really gaining more time or are you in fact losing your time instead?

Today’s post offers you a few reasons why swapping out your workout for more time isn’t such a good idea.

You’re wasting the time you spent preparing for your workouts.

Most likely you gave your workout regiment some deep-thought with the intent of becoming a healthier and more active person.

Perhaps you visited and talked with your doctor to get medical clearance, did some research on local gyms, took a few gym tours, attended a trial class, surfed online for great DVD workouts, bought new sneakers, a gym bag, workout gear, books, heart rate monitor, pedometer…phew!

You’ve already invested a lot of time and energy and effort into getting this far, so why cut yourself short?

You’ll waste time thinking about why you didn’t workout.

Ok, so you didn’t go to the gym or park and decided to go to work on something else that has to get done. Then it hits you. You start feeling guilty and think about why you didn’t exercise, why you should have gone to the gym, and then you realize you’ve spent way too much time during your day stressing and worrying about the whole thing. Why not just workout and get it done with?

You’ll begin to skip other items in your schedule.

Sure, it might start off simply with you missing a workout or two during the week. Before you know it, you’re canceling your lunch date with your best from college, skipping spending time with your significant other and telling your child you can’t take them to the zoo because you need an extra bit of time to get things done. Okay, those are some extreme examples, but the point I’m trying to make is you might unintentionally start to give up other things in your life that are also important to you.

You’re cheating yourself out of properly managing your time.

While you might think you are giving yourself more time, you are actually cheating yourself in learning how to properly manage your time. You’ll never learn to properly evaluate your schedule, prioritize non-essential items (hint: your workout isn’t one of them) and nix those things that are truly time wasters or not important in the grand scheme of things.

You are investing in your future.

Have you ever had one of those days when you’re getting ready for a big meeting or work conference and suddenly your favorite suit or top or skirt or pants no longer fits? Ugh. Taking the time now to exercise and/or work out invests time in your future for your overall health and well-being. If you could choose between feeling awful for not fitting your clothes or being able to wear your favorite outfit without a second thought in the future, which would it be?

Now to you… were you thinking of skipping a workout today or this week in lieu of getting some other work done? Did this post change your mind? Leave a comment below and join in the conversation!
