Want to work smarter, and not harder?

In this post, I offer three quick tips to help you work more efficiently.

Work on a different aspect of a project.

You’ve been pouring over the same facts and figures for five straight hours.

Things seemed to make sense just a little while ago, but now you’re not sure if anything makes sense.

It’s probably time to switch things up and work on a completely part of a project.

This way, you can give your mind a much-needed break, and still get work done.

So, if you were working on something that required a lot of detailed thought and attention, such as reviewing complicated information or facts, you could switch to a less thought intensive task, such as filing papers or shredding sensitive documents.

Go outside for a quick walk and breath of fresh air.

Working indoors in artificial light and stale, recycled air can really do a number on your ability to focus and get things done.

If you’re feeling a bit foggy in the head, take a break outside. Go for a five-minute walk to stretch those legs and get fresh air into your lungs.

As simple as this may seem, you’ll be amazed at how much this type of break can help you be more effective when get back to your desk.

Make a quick list and work on items in quick succession.

Do you ever reach a point in your work when you’re not sure what to do next? You might have a couple of small, non-urgent tasks that you need to take care of, but you’re still sitting on the fence as to which task to complete first.

If this is the case, just write down those tasks on a sheet of paper, and start working on the first item. Once you’re finished, cross it off your list, and go on to the next until you’ve exhausted all items on the list.

This is an easy way to get things done quickly, without wasting your time trying to decide what to do next.
